A Town That Grew Up on the River
Osceola's name honors a Seminole leader, chosen when the town was platted in 1837 -- eight years after William and Timothy Moat became some of the area's first settlers in 1829, and three years after a nearby rival town site, Williamsport, was platted and later abandoned by 1842.
Humidity Along the Water's Edge
A river-corridor town since the 1830s steamboat era, Osceola's older housing stock sits close enough to the St. Joseph River that ambient humidity and ground moisture run higher than in towns set back from the water, which is exactly the condition that lets mold take hold in a crawl space or basement that isn't managing moisture well.
