Milling History, National Register Present
New Carlisle's historic district -- listed today on the National Register of Historic Places -- grew from a 160-acre purchase Richard Risley Carlisle made in 1835 on land once known as Bourissa Hill. The South Shore Railroad's arrival in 1852 helped the young town along toward its 1866 incorporation.
Moisture Control in Pre-Code Homes
The same 19th-century construction that earned New Carlisle's historic district its National Register listing also means older homes there were built before modern vapor barriers and moisture control were standard practice -- crawl spaces and basements in that historic core often need a closer look for the humidity that leads to mold.
